Career opportunities in home care
If you’re looking for a rewarding career in the health and social care sector, home care could be the path for you. Home care is a very personable approach to care, allowing for the building of relationships and connections with those you support, as well as opportunities to specialise in different areas. If you’re looking for care jobs in Blackburn, read on to find out what a role with Choice Care could mean for you.
What is a home carer?
A home carer is someone who visits people who want to be cared for in their own home, in order to support them to live safely and independently for as long as possible.
Care can range from domestic chores such as shopping, cleaning and laundry to personal care like helping them use the toilet, helping them dress and supervising when they take their medication. The level of care depends on the person who needs support, and how much they can manage by themselves.
Home care can be a flexible job, where the number of people you care for and the visits you make can vary to suit your schedule and commitments.
Different types of care
At Choice Care, we provide support in more specialist areas including dementia care, people with life-limiting illnesses, complex care needs and hospital aftercare. All staff receive specialist training to support a wide range of conditions and requirements.
These can range from stimulating activities and rehabilitation to medication administration and support with paperwork.
Progression
To join our family-run business you don’t need years of experience, all you need is dedication, a willingness to learn and a desire to make a difference in the community.
When you start, you will receive induction training across a variety of subject areas. You will then complete a number of shifts with a supervisor to get used to following care plans and delivering different levels of support.
As you do this, you will also be working on your diploma/NVQ qualification in care, which takes up to 9 months to complete.
To progress into more specific areas of care, there are a number of vocational qualifications at different levels you can take to learn the practical skills and knowledge required for your desired role and to develop through the sector – whether you want to progress to a senior position, management or become a trainer. And rest assured, our managers and award-winning colleagues are there to support you all the way in whichever direction you decide to take.
In fact, one of our front-line carer-turned managers was awarded National Carer of the Year in 2017, after he came to us with no experience – just a burning passion to help others.
Online resources
If you truly share our compassionate values and dedication for helping those around you, then you might consider some extracurricular activities outside your professional training to make sure you know everything there is to know about delivering high quality care.
There are a number of organisations and charities with a wealth of online resources to help boost your knowledge and allow you to explore different areas you might want to focus on.

The CQC (Care Quality Commission)
We also work with some of them to make extra sure we deliver the best service those in our care could hope for.
